The Significance of Nicaea and the Creed at 1700 Years
Our Fall Lectures provide students, faculty, alumni, and local churches an opportunity to engage with some of the finest Evangelical thinkers addressing issues in theology and culture that matter most for the church.
This year’s theme is “The Significance of Nicaea and the Creed at 1700 Years.”
Dr. Wellum will explore this topic is three lectures:
1. Contending for the Truth: The Road to Nicaea
In this lecture, we will focus on the church's need to articulate and defend the truth of God's word in every age. Our focus will be on the history leading to Nicaea that necessitated the Council, and the heresies that had arisen in the church that Nicaea was seeking to address. Specific focus will be on the Arian heresy, which the church had to reject on the basis of Scripture, otherwise the truth of Christ and the gospel would have been lost.
2. The Theology of Nicaea: Articulating the Glory of our Triune GodÂ
In this lecture, we want to focus on the Nicene Creed itself and its basic affirmations and theology. What does the Creed teach us about who God is as our triune God?
3. The Biblical Grounding of the Nicene Creed
In this lecture, we will respond to the charge that the Nicene Creed is a distortion of Scripture and thus contrary to Scripture. By contrast, we will argue that Scripture properly understood teaches exactly what the Nicene Creed does, and as such, the Nicene Creed is authoritative because it is true to Scripture.
